The state of emergency was lifted and the tourist season would resume soon. Looked back on the four seasons of Kyoto before Covid.
Fall in Kyoto, the season of autumn leaves.
First, "Eikando". Officially, it is called "Shojyu Raigozan Zenrinji Temple". The temple of the Seizan Zenrinji sect of the Jodo Buddhism. The entrance was covered with autumn leaves.
One of the most famous places in Kyoto for autumn leaves, and has been called the "Eikando of colored maples" for long time. About 3,000 Irohamomiji (Japanese maples) and Oomomiji (same) decorated the pond garden with their autumn leaves.
"Enichisan Tofukuji Temple". Temple of the Tofukuji sect of Rinzai Buddhism. It is the fourth rank of the five major zen temples of Kyoto. There are many places to see, such as the Sanmon Gate, the oldest gate in Japan and a national treasure, and the Honbo Garden.
Tsutenkyo Bridge was the busiest point. The view of the Akane (red)-colored maple trees spreading out like a sea of clouds in the valley called Sengyokukan below was breathtaking, but it was not very relaxing.
Including the Chinese maple tree brought back from the Sung dynasty (960-1279) by Enni, the founder of the temple, about 2,000 maple trees on the temple grounds turned the temple into a golden color.
In the Muromachi period (1336-1573), all the cherry trees were cut down because they interfered with Buddhist training, and maple trees were planted in their place.
"Bishamondo" in Yamashina. Officially named "Gohouzan Ankokuin Izumoji Temple". It is one of the five monasteries of the Tendai Buddhism in Kyoto. The main deity was Vaisravana. One of the four heavenly guardians in Buddhism, along with Dhrtarastra, Virudhaka and Virupaksa.
Autumn leaves enjoyed from the Biwako Sosui boat, about 8 kilometers long cruise. Took the boat from the Yamashina boarding and disembarking point to the Keage stop. The boat started full-scale operation in 2018. This was a unique way to enjoy the autumn leaves. After the Meiji Restoration, learned firsthand about the great achievements of the people who worked to restore and rebuild the devastated Kyoto. Can apply online for tickets.
The calligraphy plate by Saigo Judo. "Go along the mountain and you will reach the source of water." Saigo Judo was the younger brother of Saigo Takamori and was instrumental in the establishment of the Japanese Navy.
"Tozan Kodaiji Temple". Kodaiji Temple was the head temple of the Kenninji sect of Rinzai Buddhism. Kodaiji Temple is known as the temple of Hideyoshi's wife Nene. The view of the autumn leaves from the approach to the temple at night was fascinating.
"Yokohen Garden" of "Shotozan Myoshinji Temple". The head temple of the Myoshinji sect of Rinzai Buddhism. It was the largest Zen temple of the Rinzai Buddhism, but was excluded from the Kyoto five major zen temples because of its bad relationship with Ashikaga Yoshimitsu.
"Oouchisan Ninnaji Temple". The head temple of the Omuro sect of Shingon Buddhism.
"Murasakino Imamiya Jinja Shrine. The origin of the shrine was Murasakino Goryo-kai in the early Heian period. The Aburi (grilled) Mochi sold in front of the shrine gate was a specialty that was said to purge the plague.
"Otowazan Kiyomizudera Temple. The main temple of Northern Hoso Buddhism, became independent from the Hoso Buddhism in Nara. The autumn leaves were almost over.
The beautiful season of autumn leaves in Kyoto is approaching again this year.
