今宵(8月16日)は「京都五山送り火」(大文字焼き)。通常の年は75基の火床が「大」の字に広がり美しく浮かび上がる。

Tonight was the "Kyoto Gozan Bonfires" (Daimonji-yaki).  In a normal year, 75 fire pits spread out in the shape of the character for "big" and float beautifully.

20時に東山・如意ケ岳の中腹で「大文字」に火がともされ、続いて「妙法」「船形」「左大文字」「鳥居形」の順で点火される。

At 20:00, "Daimonji" is lit on the hillside of Mt. Nyoigatake in Higashiyama, followed by "Myoho", "Funagata", "Daimonji", and "Torii" in that order.

夕方、祇園の「いづ重」で上箱寿司と鱧ちらしをテイクアウト。事前にネットで注文。

In the evening, went to "Izuju" in Gion and took out premier box sushi and hamo sushi.  Ordered online in advance.

20時の点火の少し前に出町柳の河合橋へ。今宵は、コロナ禍にかかわらず歩行者専用で警官や人が多い。京都人は大文字焼きが好き。

Shortly before the 20:00 lighting, went to Kawai-bashi bridge in Demachiyanagi.  Tonight it was pedestrian-only and despite Covid restrictions there were many policemen and people.  Kyoto people love Daimonji-yaki.

20時に点火。どこまで「大」の字になるか。

The fire was lit at 20:00.   Wondered how the fires make the character.

結局「大」の文字の先端など6基の点火のみに止まり、大の字にはならず。新型コロナウイルスの感染対策で見物客の密集などを避けるため、2年連続で点火場所を数カ所に減らして実施。各山で点々と火がともされ、例年のような文字は今年も浮かばなかった。

Only six fire units, including the tip of the "big", were ignited, and it did not make the character.  In the second year of Covid, the number of ignition sites was reduced to a few in order to avoid crowding of spectators to prevent the spread of the virus.  Fires were lit on each mountain, and the original characters did not appear this year again.

Back to home early and ate sushi boxes from Izuju.  Premier box sushi.

京都北山「羽田酒造」の純米酒「初日の出」。羽田酒造の酒は辛口で食事に合う。美味しく頂いた。

A pure rice sake called "Hatsuhinode" from Haneda Shuzo in Kitayama, Kyoto.  Haneda Brewery's sake is dry and goes well with meals. It was delicious.
