Went to Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa. Bought annual passports last year, and this was the third visit.
It was a short walk from the free parking lot in front to the zoo entrance.
As entered the zoo, saw a crowd of people. As luck would have it, the penguin walk, a specialty of Asahiyama Zoo, was about to begin. According to the website, the zoo does not actively promote the event or does not announce the time of the event due to COVID. The penguin walk, which is quite cute, is said to be essential for the penguins to get rid of their lack of exercise during the winter and to build up their bodies for breeding next season. Some of them are certainly overweight. According to the keeper, around two of them always skip the walk. Just like humans, it makes smile. The closer look, the more adorable the penguins are. Many people were chasing after them to take photos.
The polar bear was also very active in the snow. He was more active than that of the last visit, and never got tired of watching him.
Wolves are also howling energetically. It is said that howling is an important communication tool used by wolves to defend their territory, to avoid unnecessary conflicts, to call their distant mates, and to look for new mates. Incidentally, at Asahiyama Zoo, they howl when the music is broadcasted in the evening, and this was the case this time. Following the penguin walk, was able to encounter the howling as well. Very lucky.
This was a brown bear. This bear had more loneliness and sulkiness than the polar bear.
The lion wandered around, seemingly curious about the tigers next door.
The tigers next door were yawning and relaxing at their own pace. Conclusion. Winter at the zoo is fun! This may be the season when the animals' personalities stand out.
On the way here, stopped at Tsurunuma Winery. The winery is owned by Hokkaido Winery and is one of the largest wine vineyards in Japan.
Brewing is done at Hokkaido Winery in Otaru. Bought the wine at a small direct sales shop.
The vineyard was still under snow. Grapes generally start to become active in the above-ground parts of the vine when the temperature rises above 10 degrees Celsius. Spring was just around the corner.
